Travel information goes out of date quickly in the mountains: roads close, permits change and temples open on different dates every year. This page explains how we research, check and update our guides.
Where our information comes from
- Official sources first: Uttarakhand government and tourism board websites, district administrations, the Char Dham and temple committees, forest and wildlife departments, Indian Railways and the India Meteorological Department.
- Published references: reputable news reports and books for history, culture and recent changes.
- Local knowledge: information from residents, guides and travellers, which we confirm with an official or second independent source before we publish it.
How we check facts
- Distances, travel times, altitudes and opening dates are checked against at least one official or reliable source.
- Where figures vary (for example, travel times on hill roads), we give a range and say so.
- Where something is uncertain or changes every year, such as snowfall or yatra dates, we say that clearly instead of guessing.
- Safety, permit and registration information links to the official website so you can confirm it yourself.
Keeping guides up to date
Each page shows the date it was last updated. We review guides before major seasons, such as the yatra season and winter, and whenever we learn of a change.
Photos
We use our own photos or images published under free licences that allow reuse. Captions describe what the photo shows; they are not always taken in the season described on the page.
Independence
We don't sell trips, take bookings or accept payment to feature a place, hotel or business. If that ever changes, we will label it clearly.
Corrections
If you find an error or something out of date, please tell us and include the page link. We check every report and correct the page as soon as we can confirm the change.
