Route to Dehradun at a glance
Dehradun is the main transport hub for Garhwal. The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, opened in 2026, has made the drive from Delhi much shorter.
Dehradun by car
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway starts near Akshardham in Delhi and runs via Baghpat and Saharanpur, with a 12 km elevated wildlife corridor through Rajaji National Park before Dehradun. Officially it cuts the drive to about 2.5 hours; allow 3 to 4 hours with stops and city traffic.
The older route via Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Roorkee is still used and is handy if you are also visiting Haridwar.
- Check toll and route updates before you travel; the expressway is new.
- Avoid entering the city around Rajpur Road and the Clock Tower at office hours.
Dehradun by train
Dehradun railway station is in the city centre and has direct trains from Delhi, Howrah, Mumbai, Amritsar and other cities. Day trains like the Shatabdi and Vande Bharat take about 4.5 to 6 hours from Delhi.
- Book day trains early for weekends and holidays.
- Taxis and autos for Mussoorie and Rishikesh wait outside the station.
Dehradun by air
Jolly Grant Airport lies south-east of the city on the Rishikesh side. Taxis from the airport take about 45 minutes to an hour to central Dehradun.
- If you are heading to Rishikesh first, it is closer to the airport than Dehradun city.
Dehradun by bus
Uttarakhand Roadways and private operators run frequent ordinary, AC and Volvo buses from Delhi to the Dehradun ISBT, south of the city centre. Buses also connect Dehradun with Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mussoorie and Chandigarh.
- From the ISBT, take an auto or city bus to the centre or the Mussoorie bus stand.
