On the ghat
Watch the evening Ganga Aarti
Arrive 45-60 minutes early and sit on the steps facing Brahmakund, or watch from the clock-tower side across the water for a wider view.
Float a diya
Buy a leaf boat of flowers and a small lamp from the sellers and let it go on the river during or after the aarti.
Take a holy dip at Brahmakund
Go down the steps holding the chains. Early morning is calmer than midday.
Morning aarti
A quieter aarti around sunrise, when the ghat belongs to pilgrims and priests.
Temples close by

Kankhal and Daksh Mahadev
The old town of Kankhal, 4-5 km south, with the Daksh Mahadev temple linked to the story of Sati.
Safety at the ghat
- The current is strong; never let go of the chains and do not swim.
- Keep children's hands in yours at all times during the aarti crowd.
- Keep wallets and phones zipped; pickpockets work in the crowds.
- Ignore anyone who asks for money for a 'special place' at the aarti.
