Route to Tapkeshwar at a glance
After very heavy rain the road down to the river and the temple courtyard can be closed. Check local news in the monsoon.
From Dehradun city
Tapkeshwar is about 6-7 km from the Clock Tower (Ghantaghar). The road goes north-west through the city into the Garhi Cantt area and then along Tapkeshwar Road to the temple gate and parking.
App cabs and autos are easy to find anywhere in the city. Shared autos (Vikram) and local buses also run towards Garhi Cantt; they are cheap but slower and crowded at peak hours.
- On Mahashivratri and Shravan Mondays, roads near the temple are jammed; leave the car and walk the last stretch.
- Ask your auto to wait or note its number; return autos are fewer in the evening.
From Delhi
Drive or take a bus to Dehradun on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway (about 210 km), then cross the city to Garhi Cantt. Trains such as the Shatabdi and Vande Bharat reach Dehradun railway station, about 7 km from the temple.
- Leave Delhi early to beat traffic on both ends.
- It is easy to add Tapkeshwar to a Dehradun or Mussoorie trip.
By train or air
The nearest railway station is Dehradun (DDN), about 7 km away. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun, about 32-35 km away. From either, take a taxi, app cab or auto to the temple.
From Mussoorie
Drive down the Mussoorie road to Dehradun and turn towards Garhi Cantt; the temple is on the north-west side of the city, so you do not need to go into the busy centre.
- Avoid the hill road after dark in the monsoon.
