Jim Corbett National Park spreads across the foothills of Kumaon, along the Ramganga river, with sal forests, wide grasslands called chaurs, and rivers full of crocodiles and fish. It is home to the Bengal tiger, Asian elephants, leopards, sloth bears, four kinds of deer, and more than 500 bird species.

The main town is Ramnagar, where most safaris start. Visitors explore in open jeeps or, in Dhikala, in large canters, on morning and afternoon drives through different zones.

The story of the park

It was set up in 1936 as Hailey National Park, the first national park in mainland Asia. After independence it was renamed, and in 1957 it took the name of Jim Corbett, the hunter who became a conservationist and helped mark its boundaries. In 1973 it was the first park to come under Project Tiger.

Corbett grew up nearby at Kaladhungi, and his old house there is now a small museum. Read his story of the Champawat tigress to see where it all began.
