To ease traffic in the narrow cantonment lanes, the Landour Cantonment Board brought in a new system from April 2026. Only a limited number of tourist vehicles, about 500 a day, are allowed into the cantonment area, and only after prior registration. Vehicles without registration, or arriving after the daily limit is reached, are diverted towards the Dhanaulti road.

The rule applies to vehicles. Visitors walking up from Mussoorie do not need to register.

Official links for Landour registration

Use only the official website. Do not pay unofficial agents or third-party sites for Landour registration.

How to register your vehicle for Landour: step by step

1

Open the official Cantonment Board website

Go to landour.cantt.gov.in (link above) and open the tourist vehicle registration link or notice. The board runs the online registration itself, so avoid unofficial sites or agents that ask for money.

2

Keep your details ready

Have your vehicle number exactly as written on the RC, a working mobile number and your date of visit at hand before you start. Check the vehicle number twice; a wrong number can mean trouble at the entry point.

3

Add your hotel booking if you are staying in Landour

If you have booked a hotel or guest house inside the cantonment, mention the booking while registering. Registration is still compulsory for you, but it is free.

4

Register a day or two ahead in peak season

Only about 500 tourist vehicles are allowed each day, and on long weekends and summer holidays the limit can fill early. Registering in advance, and not on the road, gives you the best chance of getting in.

5

Save the confirmation on your phone

Once registered, take a screenshot or download the confirmation. Mobile signal on the climb to Landour is often weak, so keep it saved offline rather than relying on opening an email at the gate.

6

Show it at the cantonment entry point

Show the confirmation to the staff at the entry point when asked. Your entry time starts from there, so note the time you are allowed inside.

Keep these ready before you register

  • Vehicle registration number, exactly as on the RC
  • A mobile number you can use during the trip
  • Your date of visit
  • Hotel or guest house booking details, if staying inside the cantonment
  • Cantonment Board helpline for help: 0135-2632687

On the day of your visit

1

Start early

Morning arrivals face less traffic on the Mussoorie to Landour road and fewer cars at the entry point.

2

Keep to the time limit

Registered vehicles get a set time inside the cantonment. Staying longer can attract an extra parking fee.

3

Park where allowed

Parking near Char Dukan is very limited. Use marked parking and walk the last stretch where possible.

4

Have a walking plan B

If the day's limit is full or your registration is not accepted, park in Mussoorie and walk up. Visitors on foot do not need any registration.

Don't want to register? Park in Mussoorie and walk up

The registration rule is only for vehicles entering the cantonment. If you would rather skip it, or the day's limit is already full, leave the car in Mussoorie and walk. Many visitors find this the easier option on weekends anyway, because parking near Char Dukan has room for only a handful of cars.

  1. Park at the Kulri end of Mall Road. Use the paid parking near Picture Palace, Kulri, which is the closest end of Mall Road to Landour. If it is full, try the MDDA parking at Library Chowk and walk along Mall Road to Picture Palace.
  2. Walk up through Landour Bazaar. From Picture Palace the road climbs through Landour Bazaar to the Landour Clock Tower, where the cantonment begins.
  3. Continue to Char Dukan and Lal Tibba. From the Clock Tower it is a steep but pretty walk past old cottages to Char Dukan and on to Lal Tibba. Allow roughly an hour at an easy pace from Picture Palace, with stops.
  4. Or take a local taxi. Local taxi stands near Picture Palace and Library run up to Landour. Ask the driver whether the taxi can enter the cantonment under the current rules before you set off.

Tip: Wear good walking shoes, carry water, and go on a weekday morning if you can. The walk itself is one of the best parts of a Landour visit.

Good to know

  • The rule covers popular spots inside the cantonment such as Lal Tibba and Char Dukan.
  • Local residents get separate passes from the Cantonment Board office.
  • Rules and the daily limit can change; always check before you travel.
  • On peak weekends, walking up from Mussoorie is the most reliable way in.
