The Brahmatal trail runs through forest land in the Chamoli district, managed by the forest department. Every trekker needs a forest entry and camping permit. Registered operators get it for their groups from the forest office before the trek and usually include the fee in the package; ask what is included when you book.
Fees are small and change from time to time, so we have not listed a figure. Your operator or the forest office in the area will have the current rates.
How the permit works
Book a registered operator or local guide
Trekking Brahmatal alone, especially in winter, is not advised. Operators handle the permit.
Share your documents
A photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence) for every trekker. Foreign trekkers need their passport.
Carry a medical certificate
Most operators ask for a doctor-signed fitness certificate and a self-declaration form.
Keep the permit with your group
Forest staff may check it on the trail. Your trek leader usually keeps it.
Documents to carry
- Original photo ID and a photocopy
- Medical fitness certificate
- Trek insurance (recommended, and part of the draft 2026 rules)
- Emergency contact details
Brahmatal Permit: FAQs
Do I need a permit for Brahmatal?
Yes. The trail is on forest land, so a forest entry and camping permit is needed. Operators usually arrange it.
How much is the Brahmatal permit fee?
The fees are small and change from time to time; they are usually included in the trek package. Ask your operator for the current amount.
Can I do the Brahmatal trek without a guide?
