Kedarkantha Trek Permit 2026: Forest Fees, Documents & Rules

Kedarkantha lies in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, so every trekker needs a forest entry permit from the checkpost at Sankri. Operators usually arrange it; carry a photo ID, a medical certificate and insurance.

The Kedarkantha trail runs through the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary (Govind Pashu Vihar), so every trekker must have a forest entry permit. Permits are issued at the forest checkpost in Sankri in the trekker's own name. Most trek operators get the permit for you and include the fee in the package; confirm this before you book.

Fees reported for 2026 are about ₹150 per Indian trekker and ₹600 per foreign trekker for entry, plus a camping fee of about ₹200 per night. Eco-development charges may be added. These are guide figures from operators; the forest office's notice board at Sankri has the current rates.

How to get the permit

1

Choose an operator or guide

Book with a registered trek operator or a certified local guide from Sankri. Trekking alone is not advised.

2

Share your documents

Send a photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence) for every trekker. Foreign trekkers need their passport.

3

Carry a medical certificate

Most operators ask for a fitness certificate signed by a doctor and a self-declaration form.

4

Pay at the Sankri checkpost

The permit is issued and fees are paid at the forest checkpost before you start walking. Keep the receipt with you.

Documents to carry

  • Original photo ID and a photocopy
  • Medical fitness certificate
  • Trek insurance (recommended, and part of the draft 2026 rules)
  • Permit receipt from the Sankri checkpost
  • Emergency contact details
In January 2026 Uttarakhand drafted new rules for trekking: operators must register, guides need training and experience certificates, and trekkers must give insurance and a medical certificate. When we last checked, the rules were awaiting government approval. Ask your operator about the current status.
